Linking Academics and Popular Culture in a Remedial Reading Classroom
Research in the field of education indicates that students tend to be more engaged when the subject they are studying is interesting to them. High engagement is important to student learning, as research suggests that students who are more engaged will perform higher. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of popular culture on engagement with struggling readers. Each activity completed throughout this unit focuses on applicable popular culture and is paired with a Lexile appropriate article for students to read. This study uses a qualitative case study design and typological analysis to determine student’s quality of in-class participation, quality of assignment completion, and student perception of these assignments. These topologies are analyzed for the impact of subject matter on student participation and enjoyment.
