Causes of Classroom Misbehavior Regarding Aspects Outside of the Classroom
Classroom teachers deal with misbehavior every day. While many classroom management strategies focus on the behavior, the causes of the behavior are key. If the causes are not addressed, a teacher will only treat the symptoms. What causes misbehavior in the classroom and how can a teacher fully combat those behaviors? Maslow’s hierarchy of needs explains that causes of misbehavior can come from outside of the classroom due to poverty. Other reasons are instruction not being fitted for the student or the space configuration not being suited to the activity. Teachers can combat misbehavior within the classroom using classroom management strategies before, during, and after the misbehavior. They can also rely on programs such as The Children’s Defense Fund: Leave No Child Behind, to help students suffering in poverty. Classroom management strategies include providing predictability in the classroom, teacher preparation, and other aspects of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.
