Evaluation of a workplace violence awareness program for nursing home employees

Implementation of Workplace Violence Awareness Training for two Northeast Missouri nursing homes was conducted using materials from the American Red Cross. The purpose of this training was to prepare nursing home employees for possible violence situations in the workplace. The training of nursing home employees was deemed especially necessary because of their heightened risk of nonfatal assaults. A pretest-posttest research design was employed to assess knowledge of workplace violence both before and after the training. Analysis of the test results was performed using a dependent-samples t-test. The statistical test revealed no statistically significant difference in scores. Because participants of the study achieved high scores on the pre-test, they may have received previous training in violence prevention and had since maintained this information. In order to provide a more beneficial seminar in the future, workplaces with higher than average incidences of workplace violence and no previous training could be targeted.
