Wage Differentials and the Gender Pay Gap
The gender wage gap is the average difference between the men and women’s median wage, divided by men’s median wage. It is typically expressed as a percentage showing the percent difference between men and women’s median wages. There is a significant amount of debate and controversy surrounding the gender wage gap in the media today, especially with the 2020 presidential election approaching. Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren and former candidate Kamala Harris both provided explicit policy proposals intended to reduce the gender pay gap. Through a literature review, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis we explore the causes of the gender pay gap. We also examine the effects of regulation intended to reduce the gender pay gap through further review of the literature and qualitative analysis based on public choice economics. In our conclusion, we make policy recommendations based upon our research.
