Integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior into Service Learning: A Pilot Test
The purpose of this study was to pilot test a course module about the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in a Health Science major course for first-year students (n = 19) during the fall 2019 semester. This intervention was developed because Health Science students often have difficulties early in their curriculum making connections between theory and practice. The course module consisted of a presentation on the TPB, a worksheet designed to practice applying the TPB, service learning activities that provided opportunities to apply the TPB, a written reflection after the service learning was completed, and questions related to the TPB on a unit exam. Data collected included pretests and posttests, worksheets, reflections and unit quiz results. Results suggest that integrating serving learning with the application of the TPB created the opportunity for students to start to build a foundation for applying theory to practice as future public health educators.
