Relationship Amongst Area of Upbringing, Emotional Intelligence, and Personality

Sheila A. Lunkenheimer* and Elizabeth J. Weirich
Dr. Ashley Ramsey, Faculty Mentor

The purpose of this project is to expand the research on the role of upbringing on interpersonal differences.   In the past, research has been conducted on young children and elderly populations, so our study on college-aged students could provide novel insights. Previous studies have produced mixed results on the relationship between mental health and urban and rural localities. This study examined the possible correlations between personality, emotional intelligence, and area of upbringing. Participants completed a demographic survey assessing their area of residence/upbringing, surveys to measure Big Five Personality traits and General Factor of Personality (GFP), and a final questionnaire to measure for emotional intelligence through the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-30. It is hypothesized that people who identify as being raised in an urban environment will score higher GFP and have higher emotional intelligence scores.  The results will be discussed.
