The Empower Study
Truman State University's demographic shows Black and African American students only account for 4% of the student population. This means, roughly 300 students are Black or African American out of 6,000+. The mission of the Empower Study is to ensure that this small pool of Black and African American students feel a sense of belonging through workshops and improved engagement on-campus. In order to gain knowledge and understanding of the attitudes and behaviors of our priority population, the researchers created and distributed a Google form survey via email and organization's group chats to Truman students identifying as Black or African American on Truman's campus. The results show that many students battled with depression during their transition to college. Many have contemplated transferring to other schools, and they are overshadowed by their white counterparts. Following the survey completion, participants will attend an open forum conducted by a Black student organization to discuss solutions for underrepresentation on campus. The Empower study results will hopefully influence change and support on Truman's campus.
