Offline Recognition of Handwritten Mathematical Equations: A Research Proposal

Ulysses A. Butler
Dr. Robert Matthews, Faculty Mentor

In this project, we hope to create a tool capable of offline recognition of handwritten mathematical equations. We plan to break this problem into multiple parts. First, we will need to process the image. We will then try to find all of the letters, numbers, and operators in the image. Those characters will then be identified, allowing for the final parsing of the equation. In this proposal, we will state some of the problems we anticipate encountering and how we plan to deal with a few of them. Some techniques have already been developed, but this project also poses new and interesting challenges. Hopefully, overcoming these challenges will address some of the shortcomings of previous works. In the end, we hope that offering this tool will provide another option for users to interface with various mathematical software.
