The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of various skinfold prediction equations and selected bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices versus dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA). Twenty-six male college soccer players (height = 179.2 ± 6.0 cm, weight = 74.3 ± 4.4 kg) had %fat estimated from 3 single-frequency BIA devices and 5 skinfold (SKF) prediction equations. DXA %fat (16.6 ± 4.2%) was significantly higher than all estimation techniques except a SKF equation (15.3 ± 2.6%). Two arm-to-arm BIA devices underestimated %fat by 5.8% and 5.9%, respectively. A leg-to-leg BIA device using an athletic setting underestimated %fat (9.2 ± 3.2%). The single-frequency BIA devices utilized in this study did not provide accurate estimates of %fat in college male soccer players compared to DXA. Of the SKF equations evaluated, only the one developed on athletes of a similar caliber was an effective predictor of %fat.
