Light Pollution in Kirksville
In this talk we discuss the quantification of light pollution in the Kirksville area using Unihedron SQM light sensors. We use light sensors to quantify the amount of excess light in the Kirksville night sky and compare it to the night sky in Flagstaff, Arizona (certified dark sky city). Light fixture shields and warm-colored lights are currently being installed on Truman State University’s campus in order to mitigate the nuisance of light pollution. We discuss the experimental procedure used to test the effectiveness of the different light fixtures shields in a controlled setting inside the Del and Norma Robison Planetarium. In the future, we will continue monitoring sky brightness to assess the effectiveness of the newly installed light shields and warm-colored lights.
