late harvest wine: An Interdisciplinary Choral Project

Carter A. Datz♦
Dr. Mark Jennings, Faculty Mentor

I currently direct Truman's women's choir, Voci, and decided to engage in an interdisciplinary activity as part of class. I tasked each member of the choir to either write an original poem or select one from the public domain. They then wrote a brief analysis and evaluation of their poem, whereupon a committee comprised of volunteers narrowed down the selections to three. These three poems were put to a blind classwide vote to choose the poem they most wanted me to set to music. Rowan Swift's poem "A Concept: Vintage" was selected and I set about composing a choral piece using her poem as the text for Voci to perform at our spring concert. In my research during the composition process, I discovered the etymology of the word "vintage" and connected Swift's text to the Impressionist movement in music.
