Sexually Active and Sexually Smart: Evaluating Truman Students’ Sexual Health Knowledge, Sexual Health Comfort, & Awareness of Contraceptive Methods

195 students at Truman State University were asked a variety of (far too) personal questions in this study to measure how prepared they are to live a healthy sexual lifestyle. Three variables were constructed: Sexual Health Knowledge, Sexual Health Comfort, and Contraceptive Method Awareness. Students who are sexually active scored higher on all three measures. People who report receiving influential sexual health information from doctors scored significantly higher on the Sexual Health Comfort Test and the Contraceptive Methods Awareness test than people who reported receiving influential sexual health information from religious leaders. Race and type of primary and secondary education (public school, religious private school, etc.) made no difference in scores. The results of this study can benefit the University so that they may be able to target the types of people who are lacking in certain areas. Continued research is needed to continue improving the sexual health of students.
