Bond Cleavage: Aldehyding in the Aromatics

John D. Kilian* and Emma M. Archer
Dr. Tim Humphry and Dr. Amy Fuller, Faculty Mentors

Sulfate esters are atmospherically relevant aerosols that have not been studied extensively. They have the potential to be atmospheric pollutants or serve as agents for global cooling via primary or secondary radiative forcing. Glycoaldehyde sulfate was the target molecule attempted to be synthesized. This molecule is intended to be used as an aid for quantification of sulfate esters in the atmosphere by Dr. Stone at the University of Iowa.
