The Effects on Learning and Motivation when Giving Students Choices in the Classroom
This case study explores the effects, both positive and negative, of giving students more choices in the classroom. At a large midwestern high school, a classroom of thirty seniors were given the opportunity twice in one semester to design a project of their choosing, within certain parameters. They also presented this project to the class. Through observations of their behavior and their project presentations, student conferences, and written reflections, data revealed much about the consequences of giving students more choices.
