Hearing Conservation and Education to the Kirksville School District

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is defined as a hearing loss caused by environmental exposure to excessive noise. This type of hearing loss is permanent but preventable. A form of prevention is education on hearing conservation to those who are at risk for NIHL. The purpose of this project is to provide hearing conservation education to the Kirksville school district in order to prevent NIHL. We aim to provide the Kirksville school district with data and statistics reflecting noise levels students are commonly exposed to within the community. Education will include information on dangerous noise levels, durations of exposure and severity of hearing losses. In addition, we will provide education on hearing protection, such as wearing earplugs and limiting noise exposure. To conclude the project, the information collected will be presented during the poster presentations in order to educate the Truman State University community.
