Dr. Vayujeet Gokhale, Faculty Mentor
In this talk we describe the current light pollution level in and around Kirksville, MO. Light pollution adversely affects migratory patterns of some animals and sleep patterns in humans, increases our carbon footprint, and wastes resources and money. We quantify the amount of light that is projected up towards the sky, instead of the ground, by using special light sensors installed at various locations. In addition, we present results from the DSLR photometry of several standard stars, and compare the photometric quality of the data collected at these locations. We conclude by describing the outreach and awareness efforts being undertaken at Truman State to mitigate the nuisance of light pollution.
