Emergence of HIV: Voices of Nurses during the First Decade (1983-1993)

The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of nurses who worked with HIV positive patients during the emergence of this disease in the American clinical setting. Primary and secondary historical sources were reviewed to identify nurse characters who played central roles in the nursing care of patients who were diagnosed with HIV. Diane Jones was a proactive nurse in revolutionizing nursing HIV/AIDS care in the early 1980?s. She believed in holistic care nursing to be a blend of medicine, nursing, and psychological care. Her voice was developed from quotes found in the third volume of The AIDS Epidemic in San Francisco: The Response of the Nursing Profession, 1981-1984. These are interviews conducted by Sally Hughes, PhD, and they are compiled in The San Francisco AIDS Oral History Series. Findings were constructed into a drama of nurses' voices from the first decade of HIV's presence in the American health care system.
