Emergence of HIV: Voices of Nurses during the First Decade (1983-1993)

The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of nurses who worked with HIV positive patients during the emergence of this disease in the American clinical setting. Primary and secondary historical sources were reviewed to identify nurse characters who played central roles in the nursing care of patients who were diagnosed with HIV. Dr. Ada Sue Hinshaw was a nurse who served as the first director for the National Institute of Nursing Research. Her voice was developed from quotes found in a variety of sources entailing the history of nursing research from the time in which the National Center of Nursing Research was elevated to Institute status. Findings were constructed into a drama of nurses' voices from the first decade of HIV's presence in the American health care system.
