Transferring Word Patterns to Writing
Kelley Bauer♦
Dr. Wendy Miner, Faculty Mentor
Most educators agree that spelling is an important component for developing writing, among other literacy skills. If word study is a tool for students to become more effective writers, then students should be able to transfer word study skills to writing. However, there is a lot of debate regarding how spelling skills are best taught. In this action research study, I examined how students learned word patterns through the spelling program, Making Words. In addition, I evaluated how students transferred these word patterns to writing. Results provided evidence that the program had an overall positive effect on spelling as it was transferred to writing. Further results and implications will be discussed at the presentation.
