The Cons of Passion: A Study of Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet
Grace C. Fodor
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
This paper addresses the role of Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet as the voice of moral reason in the play. It explores how his occupation as a Friar puts him in a position to be logical and removed from being molded by the rash passions of idolizing love and burning hatred that plague the other characters of the story. It also discusses the relationship the Friar has with young Romeo and Juliet and how he is a driving force in the plot. This paper will also discuss the role Friar Laurence has as being a key component of illustrating the generation gap between the two distinct generations presented in the play.
