Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

In Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, Marjane Satrapi portrays the cultural expectations of Iranian women during the Revolution of 1979. Through the use of the graphic novel's monochrome images and Marjane's characterization, Satrapi challenges the validity and strength of these expectations for women in Iran. This essay, highlighting the perspective of young and precocious Marjane, will examine the influence that her mother has in the shaping of Marjane who eventually will become the independent woman who authors this graphic novel.
