Becoming Conscious of my Unquestioned Assumptions: An Examination of Disability and Social Isolation
Brian J. Maxfield
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
In the disabled world there seems to be a sense of social isolation. Social isolation can be very harmful and is not a new issue among people with disabilities; society has created an uphill battle for the disabled, a battle to be accepted and loved just as a so-called normal person. People with disabilities are often treated as they are invisible. As I look back I wonder why the only memories I have of my disabled classmate are of him being isolated. I wonder why the rest of the class and I made no effort to include him. I question my unreasonable assumptions of the disabled; assumptions such as their differences are negative things and these differences make them not normal. This paper will explore why we shy away from the disabled and the effects social isolation has on a disabled person.
