Comparison of Relative Muscular Strength and Endurance in Women of Differing Fat-Free Mass

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference between repetitions-to-fatigue (RTF) and bench press strength relative to fat-free mass (1RM/kg FFM) in women of differing FFM. High FFM (H-FFM, n=18) and low FFM (L-FFM, n=18) were selected from a larger cohort (n=80). Selected participants were evaluated for 1RM bench press and RTF at varying percentages of 1RM ranging from 57% to 94%. 1RM and RTF were measured on two separate days before and after 12 weeks of resistance training. H-FFM and L-FFM did not differ significantly in 1RM/kg FFM before or after training. The two groups did not differ in absolute or relative strength gain following training. They were not significantly different in %1RM for RTF. In addition, there was no significant difference in RTF before and after training. Similar training programs will result in similar strength and endurance gains in women of different FFM.
