In Shakespeare?s The Tempest, the wizard Prospero takes control of the island and feels justified in his clear oppression of native Caliban in an effort to ?civilize? him. Through the protagonist, Prospero, Shakespeare cleverly exposes the harsh realities of colonization by Europeans during his time as the audience watches Caliban, a shadow of his former self, struggle against Prospero?s control. This essay will explore Prospero?s justification of holding power over another person and the means he uses to keep Caliban under his control.
