Field Notes on Survival: A Photographic Exploration of Mental Illness
Lydia J. Frank
Prof. Priya S. Kambli, Faculty Mentor
Field Notes on Survival is a photographic body of work born out of the desire to reduce the societal stigma surrounding mental illness. Because it is such a taboo topic, those who suffer from mental illnesses often feel isolated and ostracized. Having struggled with depression and anxiety firsthand, I understand how difficult it can be for people to share their experiences with others. Although depression is a topic that has been recently investigated in multiple fields, this black and white film project adds a unique perspective to the existing research by providing a way for people to communicate the realities of their illnesses even when words fail to accurately convey their experiences. Through compassionate and sensitive portrayals of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, this body of work aims to stimulate open and honest conversations and facilitate a positive shift in the way people with mental illnesses are perceived.
