Perceptions of Domestic Violence based on Age, Gender, Race, and Sexual Orientation
Vanessa Alexander
Dr. Paul Shapiro, Faculty Mentor

This study aims to determine if definitions of domestic violence would change according to different variables, such as age, race, level of education, sexual orientation, or gender. A survey was created containing 4 short scenarios exhibiting various degrees of domestic violence. A total of 786 students attending Truman State University in Kirksville, MO agreed to participate. It was determined that over 90% of students can identify physical domestic violence in every scenario; however, they are not able to identify emotional or psychological domestic violence. Truman could use this data to educate the student body on the natures of domestic violence and how to identify them.
