Do the Covenantal Traditions of the Hebrew Scriptures Apply Today?
Caitlyn Bess
Dr. Mark Appold, Faculty Mentor
There are four basic covenantal traditions in the Hebrew Scriptures: Noahic, Sinaitic, Abrahamic, and Davidic. The most fundamental disparity found when comparing these covenants to one another is the element of conditionality vs. unconditionality. Did God promise the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham unconditionally? Or can God revoke this promise if the chosen people do not fulfill certain obligations? A careful examination of the relevant covenants is in order, because this disparity and how people reconcile it have serious implications and ramifications for the current conflict between Israel and Palestine.
