This survey study of 58 students at a public Midwestern university, carried out in the fall of 2015, questions to what extent young adults in romantic relationships utilize social media to connect with their significant others. When looking at young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 the three preferred methods of communication for this group include Facebook?s Messenger app, phone calls, and texting. The study reveals that this group tends to selectively text their friends and significant others more than their families. Although social media is a frequently used tool of communication in this demographic, there is no evidence in this study to suggest that the heaviest users of texting and social media have any greater or fewer number of romantic relationships.
