Peter Benoit's Romantic Flute Concerto: Symphonic Tale

Peter Benoit (1834-1901) was a Flemish composer born in Flanders, Belgium. Throughout his life, he sought to create a separate Flemish School and to create a national school of music in the Flemish style. But, the School was influenced by Benoit?s music which was more German or French and not considered Flemish. In 1865, Benoit's Symphonic Tale was published: two separate concertos for flute (op. 43a) and piano (op. 43b). The Flute Concerto is unique because it is a Romantic flute concerto which is somewhat rare and its fellow concerto, op. 43b, shares similar thematic material. The Flute Concerto, my semester piece, is currently in print but it is not very popular. My research will focus on how his flute concerto compares to other Romantic flute concertos, how it compares to Flemish music written around that time period, and how it relates to his Piano Concerto under the same name.
