Too often, students view writing as a finished product instead of an ongoing process; students cannot develop as confident writers if they focus their attention on the grade at the top of the page rather than the suggestions for making their writing more effective for readers. This case study reports on students' perceptions as writers as a result of explicit instruction in the purposes and techniques of revision. The study took place in a suburban Midwestern high school freshmen English class. Students were asked to reflect on themselves as writers prior-to and following explicit instruction and practice of revision strategies, as well as a discussion on the purposes of revision. Data includes student artifacts, teacher journal, and writing from a variety of class assignments. Analysis will be applied through a constructivist paradigm to explore how students' confidence in themselves as writers was impacted through the practice and discussion of revision strategies.
