Just One More Episode: Narrative Development as Interpreted through the Binge-Watching Trend

Following the development of streaming services such as Netflix and on-demand television, viewers have, with increasing frequency, opted to binge-watch television series, watching multiple episodes and even seasons of a show in a single sitting, rather than on the week-to-week basis that episodes have historically been released. Without the pressure to boost ratings or attract advertisers, series producers possess more freedom in the storylines they can create. This paper will examine how series and episodic narratives have evolved with the growth of binge-watching as impacted by the loss of demand for plot devices such as cliffhanger endings or sweeps week storylines.
