Abigail R. Fawks
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
In her novel Brick Lane, Monica Ali explores the limiting and limitless expectations and restrictions placed on women in the Bangladeshi community. Through proxy of the main character, Nazneen, and her sister, Hasina, Ali shows the burdens which women were forced to deal with in the society. Ali shows the differences in the lives the women are forced to live by showing the outcomes of the restrictions placed on Nazneen and Hasina, the former living successfully with her made-to-be husband and the latter being forced into prostitution to survive. This paper explores through the examination of the lives lead by Nazneen and Hasina the roles women were placed into by society and how these imposed roles influenced both their futures and the community around them.
