Effects of Aerobic Exercise Intensity on Acute Measures of Heart Rate Variability

We aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise intensity on heart rate variability (HRV); and on acute measures of HRV at rest before/after exercise. Does HRV occur greatest at lower levels of work, when the intensity is relatively close to ones resting heart rate? Or, does HRV for a healthy college student increase as work rate increases and moves farther away from ones HR? We hypothesized that (a) HRV will decrease as a function of exercise intensity and (b) that post-exercise HRV would be reduced compared to pre-rest. Participants wore a wireless EKG sensor during pre- and post-exercise rest intervals and during 5 five-minute stages of graded exercise intensity on a Monark bike. Mean resting HR was lower in post- compared to pre-exercise rest period and mean HR increased with graded exercise intensity. The low and high frequency components of HRV were also influenced by the exercise.
