The Development and Influence of Jazz Education in Heartland America: 1970s to 2014

At the turn of the 20th century, Jazz emerged as both a celebrated and controversial American art form. Unlike classical music of the era that was practiced, perfected, and performed, jazz music was developed with an emphasis on improvisation and liberal interpretation of the written page. Over the past century jazz has shifted from an art form relished as a reaction to classical music into an academically analyzed subject matter, taught alongside classical music in Americas top conservatories at the post-doctoral level. The complexities of jazz on the collegiate and professional levels arguably rival, if not exceed, the concepts and analysis of classical music. Through the evolution of jazz, there has been a shift from an aural-based passing down of traditions into a published and pedagogically reviewed system. Introductory jazz education now finds itself in the form of summer camps, textbooks, public school curriculums, and private lessons.
