Modern Interpretation of Music Written for Cornetto
Eian Zellner♦
Dr. Greg Jones, Faculty Mentor

The cornetto flourished as a solo instrument, as well as the leading soprano voice in ensembles from 1500 until around 1650. Fortunately, because of several early music revivals, a large amount of the literature is still available. Much of this repertoire is performed on the modern piccolo trumpet because of the range and technical demands of the cornetto. Using Pietro Baldassare's Sonata no. 1 in F, which was originally composed for cornetto, I will discuss and demonstrate the difference between the piccolo trumpet and the cornetto, as well as the differences between a modern interpretation and a more historically informed performance.
