A Tribute To Gothic Anti-Feminism: Matthew Lewis's "The Monk"
Maggie T. Wells
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
This essay reflects upon the extreme anti-Feminist nature of Matthew Lewis's Gothic novel The Monk. While most critics of this novel will notice the heavily anti-Christian aspects, the lack of positive depictions of female characters should also be noted. No woman escapes The Monk with a happy and respectful ending, and this essay critiques this work for that reason. The few representations of females in this novel are anything but positive. Using the Feminist Theory, one can see how Lewis portrayed his female characters in a very anti-Feminist manner.
