Die schöne Müllerin, a song cycle by Franz Schubert, represents more than a staple in the Romantic vocal repertoire, as it also yielded a masterpiece for the flute. Schubert's Introduction and Variations for Flute and Piano is based on the 18th song from the cycle. Schubert employs great musical imagery, illustrative of the cycle's dramatic text. Whether it is true text painting is widely debated, however, as it explores greater emotional ground than the melancholy poetry on which it is based. Die schöne Müllerin represents, as a whole, grief, while the work for the flute encompasses grief, joy, elation, and ultimate triumph. This research will explore the text and music contradiction, and whether it is true text painting. This will be accomplished through the study of the poetry, the song cycle, the musical content of the theme and variations, and the emotional relationship developed between the music and the performer.
