Using Theoretical Analysis to Aid Conductor Preparation of Holsinger's Havendance

A theoretic analysis of David Holsingers Havendance offers insights into its melodic and rhythmic construction, as well as overall form. The work features two primary motives, each emphasizing a particular interval. These motives are transformed to create the melodic material which drives the piece. Other melodic material is influenced by the intervals emphasized in the primary motives. In the absence of melodic motivic transformation, composition is driven by rhythmic patterns. Formal analysis is obscured by rapidly changing musical material and little to no direct repetition, but the motivic transformations create connection between otherwise disparate sections of the overall form. The information revealed by the analysis is useful to conductor preparation of the score, providing additional perspective.
