Implementing DNA Marker Technologies in Plant Breeding to Reduce Exposure to Toxins

A common practice in genetics labs is the use of carcinogenic chemicals. Prior to equipment upgrades several harmful chemicals were used in the DNA extraction procedure as well as the electrophoresis process. Chemicals used included chloroform and Ethidium Bromide. Chloroform is a toxic chemical and the fumes can cause the handler to pass out or even death in extreme circumstances. Ethidium Bromide is extremely carcinogenic and denatures the nucleotides in the DNA in cell. Precautions were taken to avoid contact with these chemicals including: gloves, a chemical hood, and designated containers. Because of the new equipment our lab is now able to process DNA without the use of these chemicals. The old and new procedures will be shown here and how they compare in safety.
