"Let Me Fix You": A Look at The Taming of the Shrew and How it's Reflected in Popular Culture
Ethan M. Trower
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor
The Taming of the Shrew depicts the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, "the shrew." Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments, the "taming" until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. In this paper, I will focus on the three comedic films, 10 Things I Hate About You, John Tucker Must Die, and The Proposal, unlike the play, challenge the representation of sexism and misogyny.
