Winter Guard: An Examination of the Elements of Show Design
Joel E. Fischer♦* and Emily N. Davidson
Dr. Curran Prendergast, Faculty Mentor

Winter guard is an indoor color guard activity that combines many elements of performing and visual arts like theatrical production, visual program design, creative movement, and use of equipment. The project examines ten elements of competition and design in competitive winter guard shows. The elements being examined include: music, drill, staging, costume design, program concept, use of rifle, saber, flag, dance, and competitive class divisions. From these elements a show will be written and presented by the winter guard at Truman State University. An in-depth analysis of the show and its elements will provide insight into the design process for a winter guard program.
