Dr. Betty McLane-Iles, Faculty Mentor
A literary journal comprised of primarily French issues and culture, the 23rd issue of the journal Cités features a large number of articles, essays, and interviews about life in Québec, its culture, its identity, its relationship with France and Canada, and its history. I have endeavored to create a translation of the original French into English, choosing six essays and interviews concerning areas of my own interest, such as the Québécois chanson and issues such as sovereignty and identity, working to preserve the meaning and spirit of the original French while translating it into English. My work with this translation has given me, not only knowledge of French-to-English translation, but also of modern and contemporary Québécois studies in specific areas. In addition to speaking of the translation itself, I will also talk about the challenges and difficulties faced while creating this translation, how I overcame them.
