Why Students Think They Need English Language Arts
Christian M. Lowry♦
Dr. Rebecca Dierking, Faculty Mentor

Simon Sineks How Great Leaders Inspire Action is the third most viewed TED Talk. He discusses why people should begin by answering why? Taking this into education, communicating why language arts is worth students time should be the first step in what teachers do. However, rather than begin with teachers opinions on the importance of language arts, what do the students already think? This study examines the reasons students think English Language Arts is relevant to their lives. In a class of sixteen freshmen from a DODEA high school, students wrote 7000+ words to a total of three prompts. Based on this data, as well as teacher observations and reflective journals, this study shows what students perceive the relevancy and necessity of English Language Arts to be. Furthermore, this study shows that advertisement analysis lessons may help increase the perceived relevancy of English Language Arts for students.
