The Classical Collaborations of Jazz Clarinetist Benny Goodman

Benny Goodman (1909-1986) was one of the most successful American jazz bandleaders and clarinetists during the Swing Era. In fact, he is often called the “King of Swing.” Although most of his life was focused on recording, performing, and leading his big band, he also had an interest in classical music. Much of the standard twentieth-century clarinet repertoire was actually commissioned by Goodman. Some of the most prominent works include Contrasts by Bla Bartk and clarinet concertos by Malcolm Arnold, Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Darius Milhaud, and Benjamin Britten. This presentation will focus on the collaborations of Benny Goodman with these various composers and the creative pieces that resulted from their partnerships.
