Formability of Metallic Glasses
Casey R. Wetzel
Dr. Mohammad Samiullah, Faculty Mentor

Metallic glasses have a number of interesting qualities that may be useful for many applications in the future. One of the most compelling of these qualities is its ability to be molded like one would a polymer at low temperatures. I present the article Amorphous Metallic Plastic as published in the Physical Review Letters. The research presented in this article investigates two alloys, Ce70Al10Cu20 and Ce68Al10Cu20Nb2, that are very well suited to the process of thermoplastic molding. When cast into rods of metallic glass, these alloys have an ideal lower glass transition temperature, which both ensures the stability of the compound at room temperature, and allows exploitation of the plasticity of glass at temperatures as low as 90 degrees Celcius.
