Unnoticed
Katy N. Spence
Prof. Priya S. Kambli, Faculty Mentor
I am drawn to a silent, almost unnoticed interplay between man and nature. Paint peeling, a rusty tire, a dirty windowall of these elements of man trying to control his environment have been touched by the quiet hand of nature. Working in the darkroom to develop black and white photographs allowed me to further explore this connection, primarily through noticing and working with different textures that spoke to this contrasting relationship. The black-and-white medium has the unparalleled ability to draw attention to this juxtaposition through its development of lush textures. These details elevate the relationship between man and nature from unnoticed everyday occurrences to deliberate, purpose-filled pauses.
