The influence of social media on youth is a debated subject, especially the effects of Facebook use on academic performance. The purpose of this study was to expand the body of knowledge available on this topic. In theory, the amount of time a student spends on Facebook could negatively impact GPA, with high Facebook use related to less time spent studying. A 35-item survey was developed, consisting of demographic, knowledge, attitude and behavior questions relating to Facebook use. Upon IRB approval, surveys were distributed to students of a small, public Midwestern liberal arts university (n=102). Descriptive and inferential statistics will be used to measure frequencies, survey reliability and correlations. The results of this study can be used to assist students, faculty and staff to understand the relationship between students Facebook use and their academic performance.
