Developing Biomimetic Semen Selection Protocol for Truman State University Breeding Program

Seminal plasma removal using biomimetic techniques improves spermatozoa preservation. Using determined centrifugation at 900 g or 4500 g, this study evaluates motility and viability of cooled, stored spermatozoa compared to semen centrifuged at 900 or 4500 g. A total of 4 semen collections from two stallions will be used. These samples will be split into three sub-samples, (CON, 900, 4500). After extender is added to each and total and progressive motility (T&PM) are evaluated, 900 and 4500 will be centrifuged at linearly increasing speeds. The sub-samples will then be cooled and re-evaluated (T&PM) at 12 hour intervals for 48 hours. This project is currently in progress and should be completed by April 4th.
