Synthesizing Lactic Acid Sulfate
Erin M. Leckrone
Dr. Tim Humphry, Faculty Mentor

Through the use of mass spectroscopy lactic acid sulfate has been found in the atmosphere as an aerosol. Lactic acid sulfates may be synthesized in the atmosphere from the use of lactic acid in many factories. Lactic acid is a very common commercially used product and can be found in cosmetics, foods as a preservative, a curing agent, and as a flavoring agent, detergents, as an anti-bacterial agent, and even used in mosquito lures. Aerosols are known to have a negative effect on the climate, but it is not yet clear what effect lactic acid sulfates have on the environment and the climate. This research project is primarily focused on synthesizing lactic acid sulfate to be used as a comparison standard for mass spectroscopy standard of atmospheric lactic acid sulfates.
