Synthesizing Pentanone-3-Sulfate to Aid in Evaluation of Aerosol Use in Climate Engineering
Kaitlin M. Ricahrds
Dr. Tim Humphry, Faculty Mentor

The current state of the atmosphere is declining due to global warming. However there are tiny solid particles suspended in the atmosphere called aerosols they are able to reduce the effects of global warming. Sulfate aerosols are able to reflect radiation and cool the atmosphere. Some of these aerosols can stay suspended in the atmosphere for years, and could be utilized in climate engineering. However there are some side effects that might be problematic, such as damaging ecosystems and potential ozone depletion. In order to fully understand the effects that aerosols have, they must first be identified. The focus of this research project is to synthesize and purify petanone-3-sulfate. This aerosol can then be used as a standard for comparison and further research.
